Duvall to Carnation Fire Station Communication

On Friday October 3, 2008 Tom Needham (WA7TBP) and Mel Ming (N7GCO)
did a test from the Carnation Fire Station to the Duvall Fire Station. We were able to communicate simplex on the club primary communication ferquency but not on the repeater.

I made Four (4) exact duplicates CD's of the programming disk (One for
the President, Vice President, Secretary and Fire Station) and Nineteen (19) Cd's that include all of: • Disk 1 (PS-3 Programming Software Ver 4.02) • Disk 2 (PL-1 and PE -1 User Manuals) • SVARC Constitution and ByLaws I think Jerry will give them out at the next club meeting. Technician Class for potential HAMS

I thought members of the club may know someone who would like to get a
license. ------------------------------------------- Interested in Amateur Radio? Want to become a ham? The Technician class license is the first of the FCC Amateur Radio licenses. MicroHams will be sponsoring our last no-code Technician class course in 2008 on October 17-19. Classes run 7:00pm-10:00pm Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm Saturday and 11:00am-noon Sunday. The class is available to anyone but we ask you register in advance because we have limited seating and materials. Testing will start at 2:00pm Sunday and is also open to the public by reservation. The class will cover the entire Element 2 (Technician) question pool. The course will run $40 and includes a textbook, handouts and the testing fee. The W5YI Technician Class book by Gordon West will be provided including a number of other handouts, even discount coupons for new radios. If you already have a book, the class fee is $20. Testing is also open to anyone for any license class but those not enrolled in the class will need to pay the standard $14 testing fee. The October class will be held at the Mercer Island Community Center at 8236 SE 24th Street, Mercer Island, WA 98040. To register, simply email your contact information (name, phone number(s), preferred email address) to classes@microhams.com. Letting us know how you heard about the class would be helpful. NET Controller

NET Controller Jerry and I have served as Net Controllers for most of the time over the past few years. We think it would be a good idea for some of you to have this experience also. We have the script all made up and all you have to do is read it and follow it. For those who do not get on the air very much it would be good practise and confidence builder in radio skills. I am going to upload the scripts onto this site so you can print them and be familiar with them. I will be talking about this at the next meeting and have a sign up form. I was nervous the first time but it went pretty smooth. Once you do it you find out it is pretty easy. Thanks!

Tonight at the club there was discussion on the Boy Scouts Jamboree on
the Air. What is Jamboree on the Air (JOTA)? When Scouts want to meet young people from another country, they usually think of attending a World Jamboree. But few people realize that each year more than 400,000 Scouts and Guides "get together" over the airwaves for the annual Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA). Modern technology offers Scouts the exciting opportunity to make friends in other countries without leaving home. JOTA is an annual event in which Boy and Girl Scouts and Guides from all over the world speak to each other by means of Amateur (ham) Radio. Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared via radio waves. Since 1958 when the first Jamboree-on-the-Air was held, millions of Scouts have met each other through this event. Many contacts made during JOTA have resulted in pen pals and links between Scout troops that have lasted many years. With no restrictions on age or on the number of participants, and at little or no expense, JOTA allows Scouts to contact each other by ham radio. The radio stations are operated by licensed amateur radio operators. Many Scouts and leaders hold licenses and have their own stations, but the majority participate in JOTA through stations operated by local radio clubs and individual radio amateurs. Some operators use television or computer-linked communications. http://www.arrl.org/scouts/jota/ http://www.arrl.org/scouts/ When? JOTA is held the third weekend in October of each year. JOTA takes place starting Saturday at 0000 hours local time (12:00 AM) to Sunday, 23.59 hours local time (12:00 PM), though some activity continues over from Friday to Monday to take advantage of long distance (DX) time differences.
