Echo/IRLP

kenkosters@...

Good Morning all and hope the Holiday weekend way good for everyone. I just wanted to say the Echo/IRLP project has made great progress and just needs some minor adjustments. It’s a learning curve for all involved and will be documented as we go.

With that said I have been monitoring the repeater over an old scanner and noticed lots of DTMF tones going over the repeater early this morning at shortly after midnight. I don’t have a problem with people trying to use the system but not call sign was being used. Due to this fact I temporarily disconnected the link function and called for the station to identify. No ID was given and station operator decided to quit operations. If anyone thinks interference of this nature please let Shawn of myself know and we can temporally disable functions as needed.

Text for me is fine at 425-260-1215

We had a problem with some changes to the system on the mountain and with Shawns K7ATA skills it was corrected from remote location.

Big thanks to Shawn on this holiday!

Update EchoIRLP

kenkosters@...

Update on the EchoIRLP project as it stands today.

Little tweaks and changes are being made to get things between the repeater, node and links and to be tuned up for peak performance. I have learned a couple of things linking the system to the controller and repeater that made themselves clear today but won’t go into detail.

If you do not know about EchoLink or IRLP I encourage you to do some research how the systems work and the differences in operation at the links attached.

 http://www.echolink.org/

http://www.irlp.net/

Both have a lot of information and if questions need to be answered sure some of us can help out.

At This time DTMF four digit IRLP codes will bring up the node or reflector you want to make contact with, EchoLink requires a # along with the DTMF to get out. As for coming into the system when away from the area and IRLP node should be able to make contact if you find an enabled system. EchoLink can be made from most computers or smart devices with properly installed software and logon access.

Just in the brief time the system has been up many stations have stepped in via EchoLnk from as far as the Bath England from what I have heard. So the word is spreading that the system is working!

One reminder club members always have priority on the repeater use so if you need don’t be shy to let other users know.

Have fun,

Ken W7ECK

IRLP

kenkosters@...

Hi all,

Just wanted to give a status update on the IRLP/Echo node on Cougar Mt. As of this afternoon the system is on the air and seems to be working fine. With that said any comments are welcome as we are new to operation on this new form of communication. You might hear people popping in from regions far and wide and would encourage you to call back. This is an internet connection and not reliable for emergency use but will give a new aspect to the club to use just for playing around. In fact when testing the system today I spoke with a fine gentleman in Liverpool UK.

Now down to the details. Our IRLP node number is 7079 and EchoLink number 546590 for general information. To use IRLP just pick the four number node of reflector you would like to connect to and use DTMF to type it in. Please stay away from the Win System node 9100 as it’s a select link group. EchoLink requires a # before DTMF but similar in operation. Only one link can be made at any given time so please clear the system with DTMF 73 or #73, no problem if you lose connection as the node computer is programmed for timeout after 20 minutes of non-transmit.

What this means is if on vacation and have access to IRLP node or computer with Echolink you can worldwide the repeater can be accessed to chat with us.

All questions are welcome.

Local interference on 146.580 that is a paging or digital signal? This has been getting worse and nearly constant at times in the Duvall area. If you have time please just listen and see if you can pull it in. Signal strength and your location can help track this down or direction is even better. If someone could decode and possibly decode for an ID or who it might be that would be great. It almost sounds like POCSAG but I do not have the decoding software? 146.580 is a simplex voice channel and would be nice to politely inform the station operator of this.

Thanks Ken, W7ECK

I certainly hear the signal here at my home on Tolt Highlands Road.

I believe it is more than one station, as I see generally strong signals but several different signal strengths.

At first I thought maybe 9600 baud APRS but turning on the TNC on my radio does not catch packets.  But it definitely sounds like packet traffic of some kind just from the pattern of transmissions.

Ham Radio Now Podcasts

slick

This is something I just found out about. A podcast about Ham Radio. There was a story on this in the latest ARRL newsletter. Please read following story....

Popular TV Show HamRadioNow Adds "EmComm Extra"
The popular TV show/YouTube show/Podcast HamRadioNow is adding presentations on emergency and disaster response communications subjects.

HamRadioNow is an online television show, webcast, podcast, and a YouTube show for and about Amateur Radio. The host is Gary Pearce, KN4AQ, a radio amateur and broadcaster for 50 years. The show is recorded, not live, and there's no set schedule. Viewers can watch the show at any time on the Episode Pages on its website, or on its YouTube Channel. Or listeners can download just the audio and listen on their phones with the RSS feed. The format is primarily a talk show with a pair of hosts and a series of guests. Co-host is David Goldenberg, W0DHG, an Emergency Coordinator. (Pearce has an ARES/PIO background).
Goldenberg and Pearce have announced that they are planning to produce a show whenever an incident occurs that warrants discussion of lessons learned. "The goal is to provide an interesting, entertaining and useful look at emergency/disaster response activity in the context of Amateur Radio," said Pearce. "We do in-depth shows (usually an hour or more), and can go way beyond a cursory summary of an event or drill," he said. Spurring this new aspect of the show was Hurricane Matthew. "We did an off-the-cuff show as HamRadioNow Episode 270, then a more formal show (Episode 274) featuring Emergency Coordinators from Florida and South Carolina in the storm's aftermath," Pearce said. There have been emergency/disaster response themed shows before, collected and published on an "EmComm Playlist" on the YouTube Channel. -- Gary Pearce, KN4AQ, Cary, North Carolina, HamRadioNow
