Subject: Distracted Driving Law - e-DUI

I have been contacted by hams asking about the Revised Code of Washington, Motor Vehicle Laws, update regarding distracted drive or e-DUI. Many hams would like to print the law to be able to show a Law Enforcement Officer the ARS exception if needed.

The new law has not made it through the Code Revisers Office process and anticipates the new addition to RCW 46.61 will come in August 2017.

In the meantime, if you would like to have a document to carry in your vehicle please print the following document:

http://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2017-
18/Pdf/Bill%20Reports/Senate/5289-S%20SBR%20FBR%2017.pdf

I will make the RCW available to you when it is made available.

As a reminder, the e-DUI law makes it unlawful have anything in one's hand that impairs their ability to safely operate their motor vehicle.
This new infraction carries a $99 fine and is what is called a secondary violation. If an officer notices a vehicle being operated in an unsafe manner they have cause to stop the vehicle and to investigate. If the officer finds the driver had been eating, drinking, putting make up on or grooming they may issue a notice of infraction. An amateur operator talking on their radio and driving erratically likely will receive a notice of infraction.

Just a quick clarification, the exception we were granted by legislature is for the distracted driving law and that is a primary violation where the officer observes an electronic device in the driver's hand regardless of erratic driving such as speeding, following too closely, lane travel, etc.

I hope you're enjoying our summer AND making some great contacts.

I'm not taking anything off Yahoo. 聽I just copied files from my computer to the new site. 聽So everything will remain on Yahoo. 聽That said, I don't have minutes on my computer going back prior to when I was secretary. 聽So I'm not sure how to copy those older minutes to the new site without having to first save each one separately on my computer. 聽So I'll hold off on dealing with minutes prior to 2015 for now.

The one thing we have to remember is that many do not know the new system yet (including me). So if you do move everything is there still going to be a copy on the Yahoo site for a while yet?

We also need to provide a learning/teaching time for those that are not familiar with the new sites. Perhaps at one of the upcoming meetings.

Unless someone else has a better idea, I say yes, go ahead and move all of the official documentation to the ke7gfz group.

I would recommend making an archive all of the old minutes, so that each years minutes are in a separate archive (zip) file.

Moving to groups.io is a large task, but it gives us the opportunity to
improve things and smooth out the workflow.

My only concern is how many sites do we want? We have Facebook and now two more. Sometimes confusion will set in. Would it be better to have one IO site and Facebook only? Thoughts......

Okay, let me try and clear up your confusion

here's how I envision this working:

snovarc@groups.io is for EVERYONE to post to; the ONLY restrictions are that only members can post, and everyone's first post is moderated.

ke7gfz@groups.io is for official club business only; this is where the
calendar and official documentation will reside. everyone will be a
member of this group, but only authorized persons will be able to send
out messages or add content.

make sense?

Okay, let me try and clear up your confusion

here's how I envision this working:

snovarc@groups.io <mailto:snovarc@groups.io> is for EVERYONE to post
to; the ONLY restrictions are
that only members can post, and everyone's first post is moderated.

ke7gfz@groups.io <mailto:ke7gfz@groups.io> is for official club
business only; this is where the
calendar and official documentation will reside. everyone will be a
member of this group, but only authorized persons will be able to send
out messages or add content.

make sense?
