Sam Baker.....Silent Key

Rowland

All,

It is with sadness that I inform our membership that Sam Baker passed away last Sunday.  For those of you that knew Sam he was a great guy with a dry sense of humor.  He was quite active in the club several years ago but eventually illness crept up on him and his mobility became limited. Two years ago he attended the ham test trying for his Extra but did not quite make it.  He was always fun to be around and your wit better be sharp or you were going to go down in flames.  He will be missed.

His wife Diane wanted to let members know there would be a gathering at Holy Innocents Church this Friday, August 16, at 11:00 a.m. and the funeral mass at 12:00 noon. Please see memory page for Sam   https://dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/monroe-wa/samuel-baker-8817428

I would like to suggest we have a moment of silence at the next meeting to remember Sam.

Thank You,

Rowland Brasch

Help! Anderson Powerpole. Fail!

Howard E. Mahran / WA1HEM

Edited

Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!

It's my first attempt to make some Anderson Powerpoles for my go-box. I have completely failed to crimp a single one! I am in need of an Elmer!!

Is there anyone willing to school me this week? Glad to pay with coffee or beer!

Thanks!

I’m totally up for giving people lessons on powerpole installation.  I have already found 127 of the nearly infinite array of ways to get it wrong.

How many folks want to participate?

Howard, when would you like to get together to address your current crisis?

If you don’t get schooled in the next week, I can help you when I get back from California. Can’t help much with the rest of the box, but I’m pretty good with Anderson.

Paul- Monday or Tuesday could work. I could also wait for our Thursday night in the park gathering if that is more helpful for others who might need the lesson as well.

What works for you and thanks for the help!

If we do something tomorrow afternoon (all are welcome) then you will be able to make progress to show us on Thursday.  So how about tomorrow, say, 1pm, at the club shack in Carnation?

Bob Otis

This is a good Elmer session.  I have gotten pretty good at Powerpoles, though, so I’ll miss it.  That said, the one tip I have found useful is the put the metal piece into the crimper the way you want it, and squeeze just enough to secure it.  Then, insert the wire and finish the crimp.  Also, sometimes inserting the crimped wire into the plastic holder can require some assistance (e.g., small screw driver).

Best of luck, Bob

Thank you Paul (W7PFB) for the very helpful Anderson Power Pole crimping/installation lesson today and the other great advice for building my go-box!

I’m glad I was able to help.

I will be happy to do as many little Powerpole Elmer sessions as needed to get everyone up to speed on how to install Powerpoles.  Folks need only ask. Having made many of he possible mistakes myself I’m thrilled to think others might learn from my mistakes rather than having to invent them de novo.

Tunnel Marathon comms support on 9/15/2019.

Tom WA7TBP

SNOVARC  members.

We have a request for operators for a marathon next month in North Bend. I have forwarded the request for you to examine. I was going to help out here, but, I will be helping with the Plain 100 that week-end. This is an excellent opportunity for SNOVARC operators to help out another SNO Valley group with a public service event.

Thanks for considering helping out here.

73,

Tom, WA7TBP

Date: September 15, 2019

Time: 6: 30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or unless released earlier.

Please see https://www.tunnelmarathon.com/ for race information.

Sign-up for comms support at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0D45ABA82FA5FC1-north8.

Let me know if you have any questions.

One of my favorite Amateur Radio resources is QSO Today Podcast hosted by Eric Guth (4Z1UG/WA6IGR)

https://www.qsotoday.com/

Every Week Eric interviews a significant person in amateur radio. In the course of the interview he will often ask the person he is interviewing:

  • ·         How did you get started in Amateur Radio?
  • What was your first radio?
  •  Did it influence your choice of careers or education?
  •  What do you see as the biggest challenge to amateur radio?
  •  What excites you most about amateur radio?

Each podcast is just about one hour in length. I love listening to them when I am running errands or driving on a trip. Eric has now done 264 of the weekly podcasts.

You can download the podcasts to your phone using any of the normal services (Itunes, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, You Tube, Overcast, etc).

Listening to these podcasts has certainly increased my understanding and love of amateur radio. I encourage you to give them a try.

The Bindlestick in Snoqualmie, September 7, 12:15 p.m.

Robin Amundson

Join us Saturday, September 7, approximately 12:15 p.m. on the patio of The Bindlestick (unless it rains) across the street from the train depot in Snoqualmie, https://thebindlestick.weebly.com/index.html. The Big Rock Gathering begins moving around until next summer. This QTH was selected to coincide with the annual Valley Camp summer gathering.https://wa7vc.org/summergathering/2019. Our SnoVARC President, Tom Needham, WA7TBP, will be a presenter. Emergency communicators will find a Saturday morning full of great learning and communion with other hams. Then, come on over to The Bindlestick to enjoy coffee/beer/sandwiches if you are not signed up for lunch at Valley Camp.
