REMINDER: This evening's presentation will be photography rich from the Antarctica adventure of VP8PJ.
Great entertainment and very unique. ELMER: VP8PJ South Orkney DXpedition on Signy Island -- Hear the first-hand account of the DXpedition to South Orkney in the Antarctic on the Braveheart six days at sea each way from our local DXpeditioner, Rob Fanfant, N7QT. The team left the old world just ahead of the coronavirus outbreak, but experiencing civil unrest in Puntas Arenas Chile before their ship departed, a foreshadow of what was to come in the US. The VP8PJ team successfully experienced extreme weather and near super-human physical challenges setting up camp while making hams all over the world happy with record-breaking QSO’s from Signy Island. They returned to a completely different world, barely getting home on nearly empty airplanes ahead of the travel restrictions. This is a ham radio adventure tale you will not want to miss.

Re: Elmer ideas
Paul Butzi (W7PFB)
I’d be happy to cover psk31. If we’re doing it via Zoom it would be pretty easy to do live demo from my home station. It might be nice to throw in some other digital modes as well, if only so that when people hear/see them they know what they are. Olivia and it’s stepchild Contestia are common enough that you’ll encounter them. MFSK is another you’re likely to encounter. I still see Feld-Hell on occasion and Throb and Thor are not extinct.

A new thing for packet radio

Re: Elmer ideas

Even though PSK31 is pretty much a dying mode using unsupported FLDGI software, I want to get into it. So, I would love it if Paul, W7PFB, would present a how to get it set up and operating etiquette.

Re: Elmer ideas
@lostrouter
I'd be interested in learning about bpq. I'm starting to play around with TARPN, TNCs and raspberry pi.

Elmer ideas
Now that field day is past, I thought it might be interesting to list ideas for Elmer classes. Here are several ideas that Kirt (K7KDW) and I discussed today: 2) Rig grounding in your shack Including how to if an outside 8ft grounding rod is not available

You mentioned BPQ again; I'm sending my next therapy bill to you.

Winlink W7PFB-10 and W7PFB-11 / Mistakes
Paul Butzi (W7PFB)
Last Sunday Tom WA7TBP alerted me to a problem with W7PFB-11 where it was allowing connections but reporting it could not connect to a CMS.
Rebooting the Raspberry Pi that hosts W7PFB-11 did not solve the problem. Further, I could not SSH into the Raspberry Pi to try to diagnose the problem, and until this morning I had no free time to do more than desultory debugging. This morning I first tackled the problem in earnest. After a bunch of dorking around I finally realized that all of the other computers that route through one specific 100Base-T switch also seemed to have no connectivity to the internet (or, indeed, to any of the rest of my home network.) This took me an embarrassingly long time to discover (more than an hour of head scratching). So I checked on the switch, which was essentially hidden in the bottom drawer of a locked filing cabinet in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door reading “Beware of the Leopard”. The switch was alive in the sense that the power LED was illuminated but dead in the sense that it was not routing packets. Power cycling the switch changed the switch from “mostly dead” to “working but now highly suspect and not to be trusted”. Anyway, the RMS station W7PFB-11 now appears to be working fine. When I get a moment I will order a replacement switch and also route the wiring for the rack so that it goes directly to my main switch instead of going higgledy-piggely thru some indeterminate number of switches. Memo to self: it does not help if you have backup power at the equipment rack to keep the RMS station running, and backup power at the main switch and network link to keep that running, if your traffic from the RMS will be routed through a switch that is not connected to some sort of backup power! Bad Paul! No biscuit! Eventually W7PFB-10 will be restored to service but not until I screw up my courage to wrestle with BPQ configuration again. Shawn K7ATA will attest to the horrors that lurk there. -p W7PFB 73, Don’t forget to smile and have fun!

I was not at the fire station. Jamie Hughes is going to talk about how to set up a radio and will answer any other questions, I believe. The discount is available only through Jamie as far as I know. He is a very nice and accessible guy. Robin, WA7CPA
