Re: Go bags

I'm slowly converting everything I own, that uses batteries, to 18650 cells; LED flashlights are relatively cheap, and charging an 18650 is logistically no different than charging a cell phone. (still needs a cable/adapter)

Re: Go bags

I’ve had decent luck with Duracells bought at retail locally, but horrid luck with Duracells bought off Amazon. Amazon pools stock, and batteries are apparently a commonly counterfeited item, so the pool of stock on Amazon is basically mostly counterfeit. I no longer buy any batteries of any type off Amazon Same thing with any other items likely to be counterfeited. The only exception battery wise are the Amaon Basics ones, which I expect are not pooled stock and are sourced by Amazon.

Despite good luck with batteries purchased local retail I now do as Jim and Ralph do and never store alkaline batteries in devices, and instead use plastic battery cases to hold the batteries.

Re: Go bags

I have found the quality of Alkaline Batteries, Like everything else
on the market these days has deteriorated. Used to be the leading
batteries Like Duracell and Energizer would never leak inside your
devices. Only the "cheap" batteries would do that. But not anymore
- they leak just like the "cheap" ones. <sad>

I now store all my batteries, like Ralph these days in ziplock bags outside of my devices. Jim W7ABD On 9/5/20 17:40, Ralph Lease wrote:

Went to use a flashlight today and it needed new batteries. With winter coming decided to check all flashlights including in my go bag. Had to dispose of my mini Maglite flashlight due to a battery exploding in the light. Not worth trying to get the cell out. Note to self: as go bag lights/devices seldom get used, store batteries in the go bag in a zip lock bag and not in the flashlights. If a battery goes bad and leaks it will not ruin the light/device. Several Snovarcians have recently bought Tarheel screwdriver antennas for mobile/field use. We’re going to gather at the Duvall ballfields on Big Rock Road at 1pm on Sunday September 5 to share our experiences and see how each of us has set things up.
Everyone is welcome to join us. If you’re interested in vehicle mounted HF antennas this will be a good chance to see them up close and learn something about them. Good fun likely to be had. -p W7PFB 73, Don’t forget to smile and have fun! |

Free 55 ft tower, Moseley triband and a great deal on equipment
Robin WA7CPA
This weekend I went to Puyallup with a ham friend to take down a Butternut 40-80-160 vertical from the yard of the nicest 88 yo ham who is retiring from the hobby, disposing of his stuff, and moving. I have the Butternut. Is anyone interested in it? I have been considering the tower but not too interested in the Moseley, as I have other sugar plums dancing in my head. The equipment is a very good deal for all that. Buy it, keep what you want, sell or give away the rest. Make him an offer. I am still looking at my dual QTH station planning from the 40,000 foot level and couldn't quite make any commitments. Now, the tower looks like a super good deal because Phil is looking into hiring to have it taken down professionally, removing that barrier. I want everyone to have an opportunity. If you visit him in Puyallup, be sure to ask to see his QSL card collection. He worked North Korea during the 3-day Romanian activation before it was shut down!!!
Here is what Phil wrote: My DX days are over. I just turned 88 and have little hope on the last 8 or 9 I need. I made the DXCC Honor Roll & worked all 3,077 counties in the U.S. Country total is all but 8.
I have a Mosley triband 6 element on a 55ft tower – remove it and it’s yours. Ham-M works great.
Also have gear IC-756 Pro & Ameritron 811B – used less than 2 hours. 1.5kW antenna tuner, SWR meter, dummy load – I want to sell for $900 total.
Call me if someone is interested.

I hate to quit, but we are going to sell and move along.” |
