Duvall Days
Jerry NA7Z <GJRCK@...>
Thanks to all the members of SVARC who assisted during Duvall days on
the SVT, 5K and 10K runs, especially Barbara Powrie for organizing everything and interfacing with the City of Duvall. Even tho it was a cold and wet event things went well. We should keep this in mind for a club/public service event in the future. Jerry Konoske NA7Z

How Do You Say It???
Rowland - K7RWB <slick56@...>
Since we changed the name of our club to Snoqualimie Valley Amateur
Radio Club I know many folks are having problems with the acronym SVARC. It does not flow as good as CDARC (pronounced "See Dark") did. I would like to propose that we start calling the club SNOVARC (Pronounced "Snow Vark") with is short for Snoqualimie Valley Amateur Radio Club. It flows much better than trying to pronounce SVARC (Pronounced "SSSVVVVVVVVARCKKKKKKKK").......... Please give me some feedback on this. Thanks! Rowland

Hey, Rowland, I’m glad you picked up on my acronym verbalization. I’ve always called it SnoVARC!

Recommended accessories for VX-7R?
Mark Kenworthy
Hi everyone – New guy here, not licensed yet, but almost ready to take the test. I received a VX-7R for Fathers Day, so now I’m trying to figure out what set of accessories I should get for it. My goal in being a ham is to be able to communicate during emergencies/disasters, although I’m sure I’ll pitch in on other SVARC activities, and want to find a way to use my radio often enough that I know well what I’m doing when there is an emergency (is there a monthly SVARC net?). Anyway, back to accessories…
The AA battery pack for emergencies is obvious. I saw some of the members had a shorter antenna on theirs, to make it less obtrusive. Any recommendations on what antenna to get?
Other things I’ve thought about: · Waterproof mic/speaker · Desktop charging station · Computer interface cable and software (buy Yaesu’s or one of the far less expensive ones on eBay?) · Earpiece/microphone · DC (car) charging cable
What have all of you found that you use commonly, and what isn’t worth spending $ on? Thanks, Mark

What the heck happened to having this event? I blocked it on my

Lori, I am sorry about the confusion. At the last club meeting it was decided not to participate this year as many people were not going to be available. I should have placed a notice on this site but I did not. Once again I am sorry about the confusion. Please come to the next club meeting on the 7th of August at the Duvall Firr Station and you can find out all about the club. Rowland K7RWB http://snovalleyarc.org/

New Cell Phone Law
Jerry NA7Z <GJRCK@...>
Due to vigorous lobbying by Washington Amateurs, section 3 was
inserted into this bill. Jerry NA7Z RCW 46.61.667 Using a wireless communications device while driving. (Effective July 1, 2008.) (1) Except as provided in subsection (2) of this section, a person operating a moving motor vehicle while holding a wireless communications device to his or her ear is guilty of a traffic infraction. (2) Subsection (1) of this section does not apply to a person operating: (a) An authorized emergency vehicle, or a tow truck responding to a disabled vehicle; (b) A moving motor vehicle using a wireless communications device in hands-free mode; (c) A moving motor vehicle using a hand-held wireless communications device to: (i) Report illegal activity; (ii) Summon medical or other emergency help; (iii) Prevent injury to a person or property; (d) A moving motor vehicle while using a hearing aid. (3) Subsection (1) of this section does not restrict the operation of an amateur radio station by a person who holds a valid amateur radio operator license issued by the federal communications commission. (4) For purposes of this section, "hands-free mode" means the use of a wireless communications device with a speaker phone, headset, or earpiece. (5) The state preempts the field of regulating the use of wireless communications devices in motor vehicles, and this section supersedes any local laws, ordinances, orders, rules, or regulations enacted by a political subdivision or municipality to regulate the use of wireless communications devices by the operator of a motor vehicle. (6) Enforcement of this section by law enforcement officers may be accomplished only as a secondary action when a driver of a motor vehicle has been detained for a suspected violation of this title or an equivalent local ordinance or some other offense. (7) Infractions that result from the use of a wireless communications device while operating a motor vehicle under this section shall not become part of the driver's record under RCW 46.52.101 and 46.52.120. Additionally, a finding that a person has committed a traffic infraction under this section shall not be made available to insurance companies or employers.

Does anyone know what “does not restrict” mean? The phrase in #2 “does not apply” is much clearer.

Net Meeting This Week
Rowland - K7RWB <slick56@...>
Hi All,
This week I would like to try something a little different when we do the NET on Thursday evening. After we finish the Net on simplex 145.590 MHz I would like to go to the Fire repeater on 444.525+ pl 103.5 just for a communications test. Tom Needham works with this repeater and has given us the ok to "test" with it. So set up your radios to the above mentioned frequency so you will be ready to go. I would also like to invite all the members of SVARC to join us on these Net meetings. It is a great way to test your equipment, the Net and to also share in some fun with fellow members and visitors. Remember this Net is set up for testing and practise. This is the time to use your equipment and to learn how it all operates. There are those in our club with a lot of experience that are very willing to help us all in becoming better operators. In the event of a true emergency you want to feel comfortable with your equipment and be able to use it with understanding and skill. That is why I highly recommend partcipating in the Net meetings. The old statement "Practise Makes Perfect" also applies in the amateur world. Hope to hear you this Thursday at 2000 hours on 145.590 MHz! Rowland K7RWB
