My kids are just starting to move out and am finally getting peace and quiet so I will definitely volunteer for next year, lol

In a few years I suspect I'll have more of Robin's view. :-)

Please mark your calendars for next year on July 4th to help with the festivities in Carnation. We really needed a few more volunteers this year.  It would be great experience for new hams to work with an experienced person during the event.  Also good for those experienced hams to get out there and lend a hand.

Besides you all missed a great barbecue and Ben’s house after the event.

Hope to see you next year.

Thank You,

Rowland

All,

I'm certain I left a blue windbreaker at the firehouse during the last meeting.  Did anyone pick it up?

Look, folks, you’ve got to make tinfoil hats out of *tin foil*, not aluminum foil.  Aluminum won’t block the mind control rays!

Of course, it’s hard to find genuine tin foil now, because it’s been displaced in the marketplace by aluminum foil.  And there’s a reason for that.

Obviously, the *ENTIRE REASON THE BONNEVILLE POWER PROJECT* was built was to generate a lot of cheap electric power.  Sure, it irrigated a lot of farm land.  Sure, it controlled flooding.  Sure, the BPA made it so that the mighty Columbia River turned our darkness to dawn.

But every conspiracy enthusiast knows absolutely for sure that the real reason for all that work was to drive down the price of electric power, enabling the cheap smelting of aluminum, so that Americans would stop buying tin foil and instead buy aluminum foil.  And then the government mind control rays would not be defeated by tinfoil hats any more.

Of course, those of you with genuine tin foil hats already know this.  As for the rest of you, well… you’re just proof that aluminum foil doesn’t defeat the mind control rays.

Pro Tip: most antenna analyzers have an easter egg mode where you can connect the analyzer to your tinfoil hat and the analyzer will tell you how effective the hat is against mind control rays.  Obviously you need to make the connection using coax that has fully tinned shielding for this to work.

Yup. The best thing we can do is to use that band so they can't claim it's unnecessary for us to have. I try to put my call out on repeaters at least once a day for that reason (easy to do mobile during my commute)

Related, I'm cynical by nature, and there is an fcc petition to expand tech privileges on HF. I'm actually for giving tech a bit more hf, however when I put on my tinfoil hat I wonder if it's a move to say that we don't need vhf because tech has hf and uhf+ now.

Hello all Carnation 4th of July volunteers:

I have attached the Incident objectives (ICS 202) and Comm plan (ICS 205, 2 pages) to this e-mail. Please review and ensure that your radios are programmed with the frequencies listed. For those of you that volunteered last year, there is only one new set of frequencies added. That is the portable repeater that Shawn put together.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me: tomwa7tbp@..., or call me at home, 425-333-4833.

Thank you in advance for all of you who have volunteered to help out.

Re: ITU Region 1 wants to kill 2m

Paul Butzi (W7PFB)

There’s a lot of emcomm infrastructure in the US that consists of 2m fm repeaters.  A lot of them get light use, or virtually no use at all.

The folks who want the spectrum have a lot of money.  It makes perfect sense for them to look at amateur allocations and wonder if they could get it for cell phones, M2M, etc.

To be honest the allocation I see most at risk is 1.25m, which is used almost not at all.  I’ve been vaguely considering buying a 1.25m repeater and putting it up at my place, simply to help the band get some use.

Writing to your elected representatives is never a bad plan.  Writing to the FCC is a good plan.

This stuff is part of why I choose to be an ARRL member.  I suppose I should shovel some money in the direction of their Spectrum Defense Fund, which handles this stuff directly.

Re: SWR cable or ant problem?

Paul Butzi (W7PFB)

Several points:

1. It takes about 2 minutes to sweep a VHF/UHF antenna on both 2m and 70cm, so it’s not like it’s a big deal.
2. I’m not only *willing* to help folks with antenna issues, I’m *delighted* to be able to do so.
3. The really compelling reason to check the antenna with an analyzer is that if the antenna checks out bad, you are pretty certain you found at least part of the problem (alas, there’s no law that says you can’t have more than one problem at a time), and if it checks out ok, then you know the antenna Arrow are sending will not improve the situation so we can move on to looking other places for the problem.

Back in town now. Let’s line up a time to get together and check this out, I think it will be fun!

I have a Comet GP1 on the way. Not entirely sure how I'm going to mount this one in the attic. I've got the height but no mount point that sits that low. To get the ~5 feet needed I will basically have the base of the antenna on the insulation. I'll figure something out. I wanted a second UHF/VHF ant anyway (I'm finding having antenna options at your disposal is very beneficial in this hobby). I also got an analyzer and dummy load.

and... as I'm writing this Arrow got back to me. They believe the length of the "440 element" is wrong and are sending me a new one. I guess there is no reason to test something the manufacturer believes is borked. Thanks again for everyone willing to come out and help and let me borrow equipment. Depending on what arrives first I may still need to borrow a meter. Until then... 73 (and see some of you on the 4th).

Robin, to answer your question... All my cables are pre-made purchased from HRO and are "ABR Industries" branded which should be good/average quality. Of course, test and test again no assumptions I'm learning in a painful way.

Carnation 4th of July comm plan and incident objectives

Tom WA7TBP

Hello all Carnation 4th of July volunteers:

I have attached the Incident objectives (ICS 202) and Comm plan (ICS 205, 2 pages) to this e-mail. Please review and ensure that your radios are programmed with the frequencies listed. For those of you that volunteered last year, there is only one new set of frequencies added. That is the portable repeater that Shawn put together.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me: tomwa7tbp@..., or call me at home, 425-333-4833.

Thank you in advance for all of you who have volunteered to help out.

73,

Tom, WA7TBP
