Need to find new home for club's Bell Repeater

W7ABD

The property where the Bell Repeater is currently located is being sold.  We must have the repeater removed from the site by 9/15/18.

Criteria for new location of the repeater:

1) Must have good line of site to the Snoqualmie Valley with good propagation from Fall City to Monroe.

2) Must be located at higher elevation than the surrounding valley

3) Must have access to 120 VAC Single Phase 5 Amp Utility Power during the winter months.

4) Club must have 7/24 hour access to the site.

If anyone has an idea where we can relocate the repeater, please feel free to reply to this message.

Thanks!

One possible site which seems like it merits some examination is the City of Carnation evacuation site at the south end of Tolt River Highlands.

Downsides:
* site is central to the lower Snoqualmie Valley rather than more toward the north end as the Bell site is.
* it’s not clear to me 120VAC power is available
* site does not cover the area east of the valley and north of NE 124th Ave NE as well as the Bell site does.
* site has good exposure for solar power.
* we’d really want every last bit of elevation we could get on an antenna on that site.  Even a 30’ mast would help.
* if we put the repeater there, we’d want to evaluate whether the Carnation and Big Rock crossband repeaters ought to be relocated as well.  We’d probably want to find a site on the west side of the valley for a crossband (Carnation Farm comes to mind as a possible site for a crossband, or indeed as a site for the repeater.

Upsides:
* site has a pretty good view of the valley proper.
* site owner is the City of Carnation, and we already have a good relationship with the city.

A good assessment of how well the repeater would cover the valley from that site would be relatively easy and would be a good thing to have on hand regardless, as it’s an obvious location for a crossband in the event we have a big event.

Trying to think long term: if we could pick a site that made linking the 441.825 and 443.250 repeaters straightforward, is that something we would pursue?  Is it desirable?

We don’t have a lot of time to get the repeater off the Bell site but that doesn’t mean we have to rush selecting a new site.  It would be useful to have a wish list to evaluate potential sites against.

Have a couple ideas but would be nice to run some propagation mapping before testing. I don't have software for this but can give locations to those that might.

there's a few ways to do propagation studies GPS numbers and altitude for potential sites would be awesome. We can run the numbers based on the shot mast we currently have at the bell site, as well as possibly taller masts.

Just a couple thoughts.
1) Add some height to the antenna at the Cross Band repeater location at Chucks place to get over the hump between Chucks and Duvall. If that works there is a clear shot to the whole valley. The hump is what isolates Carnation and Duvall for any location on the east side of the valley.

2) Put the repeater antenna on top of the water tower in Duvall. If you can hit Carnation you again have a clear shot at the whole valley.

You can use Google Earth to run lines between the different locations and see what the topography profile looks like. IF there is much of a hill between the two locations you will most likely have a problem with propogation.

An easy way to clear the hump is to site gear (either the Carnation Crossband or the repeater itself) at my place. I’m more or less directly uphill from Chuck and Lindy’s place. Altitude at ground level is about 500-510 feet.
For those who want to fiddle around with coverage tools my lat/long is N47.675 W 121.885.

I’ve got a GP-6 up at about 25 feet AGL that we can use to do coverage testing. I have no trouble hitting the Big Rock crossband at Shawn’s place with a handy-talkie and a duck, five watts standing on the ground.

The water tower in Duvall looks good into Carnation if the antenna is mounted on top. No Cross Bands needed. When Jerry ran a simplex test when we moved the Duvall Repeater to Bell's he was at ground level. The water tower allows us to clear the hump.

A very good long term solution is to place the repeater on King Mountain. The antenna does not need to be up on the tower, very little snow, easy hike if necessary but a drive up with permission. It could be mounted on the equipment building and have excellent coverage from Monroe to Fall City. It might work into Snoqualmie and North Bend as well but would need to be checked or covered with the Cross Band.

I ran all these simulations when placing the Duvall Repeater at Bell's. I did not know about King Mountain at the time.

Having the repeater on some sort of public property makes good sense, keeps the site secure for a long time.

IF there is much of a hill between the two locations you will most likely have a problem with propogation.

there's a few ways to do propagation studies GPS numbers and altitude
for potential sites would be awesome. We can run the numbers based on
the shot mast we currently have at the bell site, as well as possibly
taller masts.

would be useful to have a wish list to evaluate potential sites against.

King Mountain us about due east of the Monroe honor farm.  There are two tower sites and can be seen from many place around the valley.  It is gated but is an easy 1-2 miles.  I am assuming we may be able to get permission to use the site and get access.  If I look through my archive of pictures I have a picture of the signage.

I agree that more business and or public property would be the best location. I know King Mountain would also be a good site along exploring some other options that I have had floating around in me head. One other thing I need to explore is the new location of Ames Lake Water HQ, Ames Lake water moved to a new facility but had leased space at work for a year when construction was taking place. One other possible location but would be iffy is Redmond Fire station by Ames Lake. Please see attached KMZ file for some ideas to run propagation mapping.

King Mountain is very good site and higher than Cougar and far closer to home, maybe 15-20 minute drive from Duvall.

Just did a radiomobile study for that site, and it leaves some surprising holes, assuming the antenna is at 30 feet. Tower access might change this a lot, but we'd have to see what the site has to offer.

I ran some mapping and agree with Shawn that holes would be a problem along with other issues, I do know from King tower the coverage is far better than this picture indicates. The water tower in Duvall is ok site but had my eyes on one area for years in case I might venture this route at some time. Actually covers into the Lake areas and could eliminate some cross band needs so these radios could be used in other service areas. Surprising enough the Old Dump site does not cover Duvall well at modest antenna height, we don't need tower climbers. Play around with the location KMZ file I sent earlier and use modest height antenna (10 meter AGL) 6 BD UHF and 20 to 50 watts.

Can someone please run the Duvall water tower propagation map, so we can see how that compares?

Thanks,

Not sure what your program is looking at but if you do a Google Earth Ruler / Path between King Mountain and Carnation, Duvall and Fall City  and then do an Elevation Profile for each path there is line of sight with no obstructions to each.   There is nothing to attenuate the signal unless Google Earth is wrong some why.  You can scan along the profile to see exactly where the high spots are at.

I checked the Ames Lake water towers when we moving to the Bell sight and the Hump is in the way of Duvall.  Add another 30 on top of the tower and it might work.

Attached is the Google Earth file.  Right Click on the red paths to see the path profile.

The paths are there for King Mountain, W7PFB and the Duvall Water Tower.  The water tower is not bad into Carnation as well.

Just did a radiomobile study for that site, and it leaves some surprising holes, assuming the antenna is at 30 feet. Tower access might change this a lot, but we'd have to see what the site has to offer.

The only Kink Mountain I know of is south of Mount Adams, SW of Yakima;

Is there another one closer?
